Velez - Newell's / The "Super" Final

The Argentine football season is not over yet because on Saturday Velez - Newell's will play a "Super Final" at Mendoza, a one game in neutral ground (there will be extra time and penalties if needed) that will have a few interesting prizes for the winner.

Read the FULL PREVIEW of the season "Super Final" here:

So...what is this final game about ?
A little background about it: it is the first time that it is played since the first season of the "short tournaments", in the 1990/1991 season.
When AFA changed the usual 38 rounds tournament to this current format, that year they decided that the two winners of each short tournament would play a 2 legs final and that would be the only champion of the season.
Newell's won one half of the season (current coach Martino was the captain and best player of that team and Marcelo Bielsa the coach), Boca the other (Gabriel Batistuta was their top scorer but he couldn't play the finals because he was with the Argentina NT). Each team won 1-0 at home in the finals, and Newell's was the champion after a penalties shootout.
Boca protested because they felt it was unfair that they ended with nothing, so AFA changed the rules and from the 1991/1992 season we started having two champions and no final.

Fast forward to the year 2012, AFA makes the same stupid mistake and decides we will have only one season champion but this time after only one final game in neutral ground.
Fans and media say that it was stupid (and it really is) so AFA says "OK, we will still have two champions but they will also play a final".
Yes, they changed a stupid decision with a a more stupid one.

Newell's wins Final 2013 / San Martin gets the last relegation spot

Lanus had a strong start, River had its moments and San Lorenzo finished with a 10 games undefeated run, but no one can say that Newell's is not the fair champion of Final 2013.

Even if they were the champion of a short tournament (the system was implemented in 1990/1991 season) with most defeats (5) and won it with only 38 points (the record for less points is for the Apertura 2004 Newell's with only 36) they were the best team in the league this year and if it wasn't for their Copa Libertadores commitments that made them play some games with reserves or mixed lineups, they would have won Final 2013 by a much bigger difference.

They have the best coach in the league, Gerardo Martino, who will leave once Copa Libertadores is over (they will play the semifinals vs Atletico Mineiro on July 3rd and 10th), the best striker in Ignacio Scocco, and very experienced leaders like Gabriel Heinze and Maxi Rodriguez that returned when the club needed them, a year ago when they were in trouble in the relegations table.

6th championship in Newell's history but their season is not over yet. Next Saturday they will play  the season final vs Velez, the champion of Inicial 2012, before they focus 100% on Copa Libertadores again.

With their 1-3 defeat at River, San Martin joined Union and Independiente as the three teams that will play next season in Nacional B.
They didn't deserve to go because of the good football they showed in many games this year, but unfortunately for them their reaction came too late.
Argentinos Jrs beat the champion Newell's with a late goal and they'll stay in 1st division but unless they have a very good 2013/2014 season they will be in a similar situation a year from now.

Next season kicks off on August 2 when Inicial 2013 starts and Rosario Central, Gimnasia and Olimpo will join the remaining 17 clubs in 1st division.
Also around the same time Copa Sudamericana will start and the 6 Argentine teams in it will be: Lanus, Racing, River, Belgrano, San Lorenzo and the winner of the season final between Velez and Newell's.

Final 2013 - Round 18 - Making history...the bad way

Newell's won and is only 1 point from celebrating their 6th championship, River suffered their biggest defeat since returning to Primera Division but it was a historic round for another completely different season: Independiente, one of the "Big 5" clubs of Argentina, 7 times Copa Libertadores winner and 2 times winner of the Intercontinental Cup (1973 vs Juventus, 1984 vs Liverpool) was relegated for the first time ever and will play next season in Nacional B, Argentina's 2nd tier.

Like River two years ago, a series of very bad decisions and a huge financial crisis led one of the biggest clubs of the continent to its saddest moment ever, and they will have to find their way back to the top flight through the very difficult Nacional B that will have 22 teams from next season.

The 0-1 defeat vs San Lorenzo of last Saturday was not of course the reason why they got relegated, but it was the final nail on the coffin, combined with Argentinos Jrs 1-0 win vs Colon and San Martin's 3-1 at home vs Estudiantes.

Two teams are already relegated, Union and Independiente, and the 3rd one will be decided in the last round when Argentinos Jrs visits the (almost) champion Newell's, San Martin visits a River that lost their last chance of fighting for the championship, and Atletico Rafaela plays at Velez.

The champion of Final 2013 will be Newell's. It might happen this Wednesday if Lanus can't beat Estudiantes when they complete the last 45 minutes of the game that was suspended at halftime 10 days ago, and that they are losing 0-2.
If they can complete an almost miraculous come back in that game, they would need to win at San Lorenzo, hope that Argentinos can win at Newell's...and that would give them the chance of playing a playoff game in neutral ground to win the championship !!!

Of course this combination of results is almost impossible, so it's very likely that Newell's will win their 6th league championship and first one since 2004 in less than 48 hrs.

Newell's (OK, or Lanus) will play a season final agains the Inicial 2012 winner, Velez, that will decide which one will play Copa Sudamericana with the other teams already qualified: Lanus, River, Belgrano, Racing and San Lorenzo.

All the Round 18 goals:

The last round (19) will be played in the next weekend, schedule still to be decided:

Newell's - Argentinos Jrs
River - San Martin de San Juan
San Lorenzo - Lanus
Velez - Atletico de Rafaela
Estudiantes - Belgrano
Tigre - Quilmes
Godoy Cruz - Boca
Arsenal - All Boys
Racing - Union
Colon - Independiente
