Final 2013 - Round 15 - It's getting crowded at the top

Round 14 had a curious situation as neither of the 3 teams fighting for the championship were able to win.
Newell's had everything under control at Quilmes, they were winning 1-0, missed a penalty in the 1st half, a few chances in the 2nd, and when it looked like the hosts were giving up, their most talented player Miguel Caneo, found the ball inside the box and scored the equalizer.

No one was happier than River fans with this results. They were playing against the almost relegated Union and had a perfect chance to get closer to the leader Newell's...but that didn't happen.
They conceded twice in the 1st half and were lucky that goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero saved a penalty that would have finished the game.
River improved in the 2nd half, scored the 2-2 and were closer to win it but in the end getting 1 point against a team that will be playing in Nacional B 3 months for now, was too little.

Everything was set for Lanus to reach Newell's at the top, but they failed as well. Their visit to Tigre was a 0-0 where their best moments of the game came late in the 1st half, but were also very close to lose it in the end.

The big winners of the weekend were San Lorenzo with its 4 wins in the last 5 games, Arsenal and Godoy Cruz that got 6 points within Newell's and who knows what will happen with 5 rounds left.

Meanwhile at the bottom of the Averages table Union is doomed to play next season in 2nd division and it will be confirmed mathematically this weekend or the next one, San Martin is in a very dangerous situation, and the 3rd spot will be for Independiente, Argentinos Juniors or Quilmes.
Independiente is still in the relegation zone but they are looking more alive than ever with their 3 wins in the last 4 games while Argentinos Jrs is in a complete chaos after losing 5 games in a row.

All Round 14 goals:

Round 15 starts tonight and will feature the 2nd of 3 Newell's - Boca in 6 days (1st leg of Copa Libertadores Quarterfinal between them was 0-0 on Thursday night), Lanus visits San Martin in a must win for both and River at home vs Rafaela among the most important games:

Six rounds left in the season and still everything yet to be decided.

The top places of Final 2013 show a 3 teams fight, Newell's at the top followed by Lanus one point behind, and River with 3 points less.
The next team is Atletico Rafaela who is 7 behind the leader so with only 18 points left to be played it looks like it'll be one of the current top 3 that will be celebrating at the end of June when the 2012/2013 season is over.

Newell's, definitely the best team in the league at the moment despite what happens in these last games, coached by Gerardo Martino and with the best striker (or I would say player) in the league, Ignasio Scocco, is going for the "impossible": win the league and Copa Libertadores in the same semester, something that no Argentine team was able to do since the short tournaments system was implemented almost 25 years ago.
Last night they advanced to the Quarterfinals of Copa Libertadores eliminating Velez on away goals (lost 0-1 at home, won 2-1 away) where they'll meet Boca, the 6 times Libertadores winner that is going through a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde semester playing awfully in the league where they are only 3 points above the last placed team Argentinos Juniors, but they have been succesfull in the international competition getting past Corinthians, the 2012 champion with an aggregate of 2-1 (1-0 at home, 1-1 away).

The bottom of the Averages table that will decide the 3 relegations has a clearer picture but with still to be decided as well.
It should be only a matter of time, maybe 2 more rounds, before Union is relegated and even though San Martin looks like a big candidate to play in Nacional B this season, they still might have a chance of avoiding it if they can win 3 or 4 of the remaining 6 rounds.
The third spot will be for Independiente (one of the two teams that were never relegated), Argentinos Juniors or Quilmes.

Round 14 starts next Friday and will feature two very interesting games: a BIG relegation final in Independiente - San Martin, and a match between two teams that play in my opinion some of the best football in the league, Quilmes - and the leader Newell's.
Also River visits the almost relegated Union, and 2nd placed Lanus will close the round at Tigre.
