Another round gone as we reach the end of the first quarter of Final 2013 and Lanus continues their unstoppable run with 4 wins in 5 matches that includes only 1 goal conceded.
This week the 3 points came through a 2-1 win at home vs Arsenal, who were playing an almost all reserves squad due to their midweek Copa Libertadores commitments that included a game at Sao Paulo last Thursday (1-1) and they play at home against the same rival this week.
Lanus was clearly better and it should have been a bigger win, but they relaxed too much in the 2nd half.
Similar situation for River and their 2-1 win vs Colon.
The "Millonarios" were able to recover from last week's defeat in the derby at San Lorenzo with a good performance that puts them in 2nd place only 1 point behind Lanus.
Only one other undefeated team left besides Lanus and it is the surprising Godoy Cruz, who won a huge game at Independiente 1-0 and they now sit two points from the top, and they meet with the leader this next weekend !
Independiente just can't catch a break. They won the derby vs Racing two weeks ago and it looked like it was the starting point for the winning streak they need to get out of the relegation zone, but they've accumulated two defeats after it and their future looks bleak at the moment.
One of the reasons for this is Quilmes and their uprising moment. They were a lot better than Argentinos Juniors, a team in a complete free fall at the moment.
All 3 goals were long shots and definitely worth to watch (check the video with all the round goals below) but there were never any doubts about the visitors taking the 3 points.
Talking about Argentinos Jrs, they have a new coach and it's Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, the "magician" who is hired by teams that are fighting relegation to save them.
His "magic" is to use very defensive tactics, we'll see if it works for Argentinos like it did last season for San Lorenzo.
Boca continues struggling and with a reserves team rescued a point in the final minuted vs Atletico Rafaela, Belgrano beat a Velez with reserves, San Lorenzo couldn't continue their good momentum of winning the derby vs River and lost at home vs Tigre, and we have our weekly violent episode in San Martin - Racing when the home fans suspended the match angry because their team was losing 0-3 and they will most likely get relegated at the end of the season.
Round 5 results:
Belgrano 1 - Vélez 0
Independiente 0 - Godoy Cruz 1
Unión 1 - All Boys 1
Estudiantes 2 - Newell's 4
San Martín de San Juan 0 - Racing Club 3 (SUSP at 85 min)
San Lorenzo 0 - Tigre 1
River Plate 2 - Colón 1
Atlético de Rafaela 1 - Boca Juniors 1
Lanús 2 - Arsenal 1
Argentinos Juniors 1 - Quilmes 3
All the goals:
Round 6 starts next Friday and will be the last one before the world cup qualifiers break (Argentina plays vs Venezuela and at Bolivia).
Summer is coming to an end, temperatures are going down, so we'll start having earlier kick off matches (we had a 5pm limit since December) as you can see on Saturday and Sunday.
Some very important games in this round: a HUGE relegation match between Independiente and Quilmes, the leader Lanus visits Godoy Cruz (both are undefeated) and River goes to Rosario to visit Newells.
