Copa Libertadores' 54th edition kicks off this week
It's been a historic week in Southamerican football as the Brazil squad joined Argentina and also failed to advance to the final stage of the U20 championship that gives 4 places in the World Cup that will be played later this year at Turkey.
Brazil performances were as bad as Argentina's and for the first time ever the two biggest countries in Southamerican football and maximum winners of this competition (Argentina won it 6 times and Brazil 5 out of 20 editions including the last one in 2011) will both fail to attend the youth world cup !!
Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador and Peru are now set to play a very entertaining and interesting final stage in a round robin system group where the top 4 will get a spot in the FIFA U20 World Cup.
But this won't be the only stuff to watch this week in South America, because the 54th edition of Copa Libertadores, the most important and prestigious club competition in the continent will kick off it's 1st stage with the 1st legs of the 6 series that will qualify 6 teams to the groups stage.
Argentina's Tigre will have their debut in this competition hosting Venezuela's Anzoategui, the multiple Libertadores champion Sao Paulo will play against Bolivia's Bolivar, while the biggest Paraguay's club, Olimpia, will visit Uruguay's Defensor Sporting in some of the most important matches of this first week of competition.
Two legs series, away goals do count and the winners advance to the groups stage where all the other teams are waiting to start what should be another exciting season of this tournament.
This will be this week's schedule (kick off times are in GMT-3), the 2nd legs will be played the following week:
Tigre (ARG) vs Dep. Anzoátegui (VEN) - 22/1 20:15
Liga de Quito (ECU) vs Gremio (BRA) - 23/1 21:00
Deportes Tolima (COL) vs U. César Vallejo (PER) - 24/1 21:15
Defensor Sporting (URU) vs Olimpia (PAR) - 24/1 19:00
Sao Paulo (BRA) vs Bolívar (BOL) - 23/1 21:00
