Tigre advances to the groups stage !!

After the narrow 2-1 win in the 1st leg the series vs the Venezuelan club Deportivo Anzoategui looked open, but Tigre finally showed the quality difference between both teams by getting a very clear and completely deserved 3-0 at Venezuela to advance to the groups stage in their first ever participation in Copa Libertadores, the biggest clubs competition in America.

They will be in group 2 with Sporting Cristal (Peru), Palmeiras (Brazil) and Libertad (Paraguay) fighting to continue this unbelievable season in international competitions (they lost the Copa Sudamericana final less than 2 months ago) that hasn't been that good in the domestic league where they won only one of 17 games played (they have two postponed matches that will be played in the next 2 weeks).

With Tigre in the groups stage it will be 5 Argentinean clubs in the competition as they join Velez, Boca, Newell's and Arsenal.

Tigre debuts with a win

Deserved win for Tigre in their historic debut in Copa Libertadores but also lucky at the same time as both goals came with a little help from Anzoategui's defense.

No surprises during the 1st half with the hosts pushing forward and the Venezuelan team waiting to play on counter attacks, and through one of them they scored the 1st goal of the game.
That 0-1 hurt Tigre, which is not a team designed to open closed defenses but they kept attacking with their usual long balls trying to find Santander or Maggiolo and in their most desperate moment, they scored the equalizer on a ball that was deflected on a defender and fell on Gabriel Peñalba's (in his 1st game for Tigre) feet for a nice volley.

Only a few minutes after a huge save from Tigre's goalkeeper Javier Garcia, the 2-1 came on a very long free kick that was barely touched with his head by young reserve Leandro Leguizamon.
It could have been 3-1 after that but in the end the Venezuelan team held to the 1 goal defeat that leaves the series completely open before the 2nd leg that will be played next week.

Copa Libertadores' 54th edition kicks off this week

It's been a historic week in Southamerican football as the Brazil squad joined Argentina and also failed to advance to the final stage of the U20 championship that gives 4 places in the World Cup that will be played later this year at Turkey.
Brazil performances were as bad as Argentina's and for the first time ever the two biggest countries in Southamerican football and maximum winners of this competition (Argentina won it 6 times and Brazil 5 out of 20 editions including the last one in 2011) will both fail to attend the youth world cup !!
Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador and Peru are now set to play a very entertaining and interesting final stage in a round robin system group where the top 4 will get a spot in the FIFA U20 World Cup.

But this won't be the only stuff to watch this week in South America, because the 54th edition of Copa Libertadores, the most important and prestigious club competition in the continent will kick off it's 1st stage with the 1st legs of the 6 series that will qualify 6 teams to the groups stage.

Argentina's Tigre will have their debut in this competition hosting Venezuela's Anzoategui, the multiple Libertadores champion Sao Paulo will play against Bolivia's Bolivar, while the biggest Paraguay's club, Olimpia, will visit Uruguay's Defensor Sporting in some of the most important matches of this first week of competition.

Two legs series, away goals do count and the winners advance to the groups stage where all the other teams are waiting to start what should be another exciting season of this tournament.

This will be this week's schedule (kick off times are in GMT-3), the 2nd legs will be played the following week:

Tigre (ARG) vs Dep. Anzoátegui (VEN) - 22/1 20:15
Liga de Quito (ECU) vs Gremio (BRA) - 23/1 21:00
Deportes Tolima (COL) vs U. César Vallejo (PER) - 24/1 21:15
Defensor Sporting (URU) vs Olimpia (PAR) - 24/1 19:00
Sao Paulo (BRA) vs Bolívar (BOL) - 23/1 21:00
León (MEX) vs Deportes Iquique (CHI) - 22/1 22:45

South American Youth Championship kicks off tonight

Mendoza and San Juan, two beautiful Argentinean provinces about 1000km from Buenos Aires, right besides the "Los Andes", the longest rage of highlands in the world that serves as the natural border between Argentina and Chile.

The 10 CONMEBOL countries are divided in two groups of 5 teams where they will play each other, with the top 3 teams of each group advancing to the final stage.

In this final stage the 6 remaining teams will play a round robin system with the top 4 qualifying to the U20 World Cup to be played at Turkey later this year.

The first stage that kicks off tonight will feature two games per day, and will finish on January 18th, while the final stage starts on January 20th and will end on February 3rd when a champion will be crowned.
Definitely a very expected tournament where as usual we should be able to see some great football, featuring some of the young stars of the continent.

This will be the 26th edition of this tournament. Brazil leads with 11 championships (including the last 2 in 2009 and 2011), followed by Uruguay with 7 (the last one in 1981), and Argentina with 4.
