Clausura 2012 - Round 17 - Madness at both ends

What looked like a sure championship for Boca a round ago is now a completely open fight for the title as we have 6 teams separated by only 6 points !!!!

Boca could only draw against Banfield, arguably the worst team in the league this season, who was playing with 10 men during the whole game (received a red card after only 4 minutes played) while every other team behind them won: Arsenal, Tigre, Newell's, Velez and All Boys.

The final 2 rounds couldn't be more exciting because Boca will host Arsenal next week and visit All boys in the last game, while in the next round we'll have also Velez - Tigre.

Boca is still the only leader and depend on themselves but let's not forget that they are still alive in Copa Libertadores and the next two weeks they will be playing the semifinals against Universidad de Chile, the first leg this Thursday at home and the following week at Santiago de Chile.

Just as a reminder, if 2 or more teams have the same points at the top of the standings when the league is over, they will have to play a final game in neutral ground to decide the championship (this has already happened in Apertura 2006 and Apertura 2008).
Goals difference DOES NOT decide who wins the title.

If the title race is not exciting enough, we have another huge battle at the bottom of the Averages table.
Besides Olimpo who is already relegated since last week, San Martin, San Lorenzo, Atletico Rafaela, Tigre (yes, at the same time that they are fighting for the championship!!!) and Banfield are fighting to avoid the direct relegation and the promotion playoffs.

One of these will get relegated, two will play the promotion playoffs and at this moment with only 2 rounds left, try to predict who will end where is basically impossible because of the many variables and possibilities on the table.

Round 17 will end tonight with Racing - Colon, two teams playing for nothing.

  2. Boca also has the Argentina Cup Final to play against Racing with AFA wanting to play it before the end of June to avoid contracts issues, which makes me ask: how can they play the playoffs of the contracts expire at the end of June?

  3. They will sign small contract extensions, no big deal about it.
Not all players have expiring contracts of course.

  4. No date yet, it depends on Boca advancing to Copa Libertadores finals or not.
30/6 or 9/7 are the most probable dates.
