International Friendly / Switzerland - Argentina

Argentina goes to Switzerland today to play its first match of 2012, a year where some important World Cup qualifiers games will be played.
Coach Alejandro Sabella will be on Argentina's bench for the 9th time since he replaced Sergio Batista after last Copa America fiasco, with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats.

The expected starting lineup for Argentina, using a classic 4-4-2 formation is:

Sergio Romero (Sampdoria); Hugo Campagnaro (Napoli), Ezequiel Garay (Benfica), Federico Fernández (Napoli), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City); Jose Sosa (Methalist Karkiv), Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Rodrigo Braña (Estudiantes), Maxi Rodríguez (Liverpool); Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Sergio Agüero (Manchester City).

The other called players are: Gonzalo Higuaín (Real Madrid), Daniel Diaz (Getafe), Fernando Gago (Roma), Erik Lamela (Roma), Rodrigo Palacio (Genoa), Luciano Monzón (Nice), Mariano Andújar (Estudiantes), Eduardo Salvio (Atlético de Madrid).

Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid) and Marcos Rojo (Spartak Moscow) were called but are not available due to injures.

It's obvious that Sabella is looking to renew Argentina's defense, the team's weakest point the last years, as he has called Campagnaro for the first time and will use Fernandez and Garay, two players with good potential but little international experience.

Braña, as Fernandez and Sosa, have been coached by Sabella when he won Copa Libertadores and a Argentine league championship with Estudiantes so it's not surprise that he called them and will use them in the starting lineup.

On paper it looks like defensive minded team that will depend on Jose Sosa having a good day to play as the link between midfield and Messi/Aguero, but there are enough options on the bench to make it more offensive if needed.

The quality difference between both teams is obvious, but Argentina has been so disappointing the last few years despite having a team with an enormous potential, that the game could be more open than expected.

Clausura 2012 - Round 3 - Lanus...lanus...

Round 3 of Clausura has ended but you still can join the paid service of Argentina Previews and get all the best information, tips and more for Argentine football plus Copa Libertadores/Sudamericana games.
There's still a lot of profit to be made !!!

Some things never change and one of them is Lanus losing games they are supposed to win or games they must win. They've been doing it regularly since 2007 after they won their first championship, but it's new that they do it this early in the tournament !
They started as expected moving the ball around and having the best scoring positions, but San Martin was looking strong in defense and dangerous on counter attacks and that's exactly how the 1st goal came. The 2nd half was pretty much the same and after the 0-2 came the hosts just gave up, conceded a 3rd one and were only able to get a useless goal before FT.

This result leaves us with 4 leaders of Clausura after 3 rounds: Boca, Velez, All Boys and Tigre

Round 4 will start next Friday and will include some very interesting matches: one between two leaders, All Boys - Velez, and 2 huge derbies; San Lorenzo - Boca and Colon - Union.

Clausura 2012 - Round 3 - Sunday / 4 Leaders

Remember that if you want to get full, deep previews with predictions and tips for every game of Clausura, you have to write me to mncarg@gmail.com asking for fee and service details.

With only 1 game left in Round 3 we have 4 leaders in Clausura: Boca, Velez, All Boys and Tigre, who are together with Lanus and Estudiantes, the only teams that are still undefeated this semester.

To Sunday games...

Racing 1 - Banfield 2

I've written "disappointing" so many times about Racing that it's getting boring, but that's what they are. The game started perfect for them with a goal in the 4th minute (penalty kick) but a few minutes later they conceded through another penalty kick. They continued dominating, and when in the 35th minute Banfield received a red card, the game was played on Banfield's box the next 40 minutes.
Banfield held with a 9 men defense trying to play on counter attacks, and Racing helped them with some harmless attack despite having the ball almost 90% of the time.
With 10 minutes left, they received a red card too thanks to Colombian striker Teofilo Gutierrez stupidity (he might have scored a lot for them but fans are losing their patience with him) and slowly they started to realize that a draw might not be that bad...until in the last minute of the game Banfield scored with a header and all hell broke lose for Racing.
Everybody left the stadium insulted and 68 years old coach Alfio Basile even insulted a few fans back and invited them to fight. Nice !
Banfield showed basically nothing, only a lot of heart and some luck, not bad after such poor results lately.

Boca 2 - Newell's 0

Boca won in Boca style once again, but this time I have to admit they played a little better and even though they were not brilliant, it was a fair win.
Newell's had a step back in their recovery. They respected Boca too much, left them manage the ball and when it looked like at least they were taking a draw to HT they took a nap in defense and conceded. And you know what happens when you concede to Boca...you rarely come back from that.

Velez 3 - Arsenal 2

Velez again was the best team of the round and there's not much to comment about it.
They were winning comfortably, relaxed a little bit too much and suffered in the end but got an overall deserved win.
Good game by Arsenal too, as usual they were a tough team despite conceding 3 goals.

Godoy Cruz 0 - Tigre 2

What an important win for Tigre. Those 3 points kept them within a short distance of San Lorenzo, they got a bigger one above Olimpo and got closer to Union.
But it wasn't an easy game for them. They scored early and then held to the 1-0 thanks to a brilliant game by goalkeeper Javier Garcia who saved them a couple of times (the post also did it once) and then they finished the game on a counter attack when Godoy Cruz was all in offense.

Round 3 ends today with Lanus hosting San Martin de San Juan at 21.15 (GMT-3)

Free Preview !!! Racing - Banfield today !!!

The Free Preview sponsored by www.ACBET.com is here !!

Download here: http://bit.ly/AtHFbB

Racing -0.75 @ 1.90 or for those that want to risk a little more the -1 @ 2.30 could be a good option for mid stakes bet.

Good Luck !!!

UPDATE: Racing played with 45 minutes with one more men on the field and ended losing the game in the last minute. They probably deserved to win it but it was another dull performance by a disappointing team and the recommended bet unfortunately was lost.
2-1 in the 3 rounds, so keep an eye for more free previews or join Argentina Previews and get the info for all games of Clausura !!

Clausura 2012 - Round 3 - Saturday / San Lorenzo wins !!!

You know it's always a good day for me when San Lorenzo wins (and these days have been so scarce lately...) but it has to be even better if all games go pretty much as expected (and if you are a customer of Argentina Football Previews, you definitely know this ;) ).

Argentinos Jrs 0 - San Lorenzo 1

The 1st half of Argentinos - San Lorenzo was simply awful, and it looked like only a mistake could change the 0-0.
It was not a mistake, but a good counter attack early in the 2nd half, and this 0-1 by young striker Nahuel Benitez gave the visitors big confidence to go for a 2nd goal.
Argentinos had a couple of chances to get a draw, but San Lorenzo missed at least 3 huge chances for a 0-2.
It was 0-1 in the end and some air for San Lorenzo who climbs one place in the Averages table, to the 17th spot but still in promotion playoffs zone.

Estudiantes 2 - Independiente 0

Estudiantes and Independiente played to see who was the most disappointing team and Independiente won that title, because Estudiantes took the game.
Without playing a brilliant game the host was definitely better than Independiente, who has 0 everywhere: 0 points, 0 goals scored...and they are close to have 0 coaches because after the game there were rumors that Ramon Diaz might resign. Some light at the end of the tunnel for Estudiantes who won their first game of Clausura and still have time to play better.

Colon 3 - Olimpo 1

Good win for Colon on coach Roberto Sensini's debut. Not a great performance but they were better than Olimpo for sure and finally scored their first goals of the semester.
Olimpo is at the bottom of the Averages table and it's very difficult to imagine how they will manage to get out of there before the season is over.

Remember that if you want to get full, deep previews with predictions and tips for every game of Clausura, you have to write me to mncarg@gmail.com asking for fee and service details.

Round 3 continues today with these 4 matches (all KO times in GMT -3):

17.00-- Racing Club-Banfield
17.00-- Vélez Sarsfield-Arsenal F.C.
19.10-- Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba-Tigre
19.10-- Boca Juniors-Newell's Old Boys

Clausura 2012 - Round 3 / The Relegation Battle

Remember that if you want to get full, deep previews with predictions and tips for every game of Clausura, you have to write me to mncarg@gmail.com asking for fee and service details.

Two key games for the relegation battle opened round 3 of Clausura.

Belgrano 1 - Union 0

Belgrano was better than a harmless Union that barely had any scoring chances through the game. Belgrano wasn't a lot better but scored a nice long shot goal and took 3 important points while Union could end this round in the 18th place of the Averages table if San Lorenzo wins today.

Atletico Rafaela 0 - All Boys 1

The 2nd game was dull and really boring, nothing new for All Boys but a surprise for a team like Rafaela that can play good football.
The match was definitely bound to be a 0-0 because except for an almost own goal by an All Boys defender that hit the post with 15 minutes left, the 2nd half was even more boring than the 1st one, and in the last minutes both teams looked happy enough with the draw, especially All Boys knowing that Union had lost in the 1st game of the day.
3rd extra time minute of 3 added, the referee was ready to finish it...but an All Boys player (playmaker Matias Perez Garcia who came from the bench) stole the ball from a Rafaela defender that was ready to shoot it as far as possible, and with a long shot from outside the box gave his team 3 very important points.
Lucky run for All Boys with 2 consecutive wins in games that they almost don't create any good offensive football.

Round 3 will continue today with 3 games (all times local, GMT-3):

19.10 / Colon - Olimpo
19.10 / Estudiantes - Independiente
21.30 / Argentinos Jrs - San Lorenzo

Copa Libertadores / Olimpia 2 - Lanus 1 + Round 3 Starts Today !

Lanus's defeat closed a mixed luck week for Argentinean teams as 2 won and 2 lost.

Olimpia was not much better than the Argentineans but they took a fair win because they made good use of the few scoring chances they had while Lanus not only didn't but they also played a poor defensive game.

Lanus took the worst part of all this because this lost game made his chances to advance get smaller. They only have 1 point in 2 games and will need to win @ Brazil vs Flamengo or @ Ecuador vs Emelec, besides of course winning both games left at home.

Today Round 3 of Clausura will start with 2 games involving teams that need points to escape from the promotion playoff/relegation places.

Remember that if you want to get full, deep previews with predictions and tips for every game of Clausura, you have to write me to mncarg@gmail.com asking for fee and service details.

Copa Libertadores / Univ. de Chile 5- Godoy Cruz 1 / Velez 3 - Chivas 0

Copa Libertadores actioned continued last night for Argentinean teams as Godoy Cruz and Velez played their 2nd group games with completely different luck.

Godoy Cruz was completely destroyed by the Chilean team, champion of Copa Sudamericana 2011 a couple of months ago, who after not so good performances in this 2012 (they lost some very important players in the offseason) they finally woke up and played a lot better than the Argentinean team.

The game was balanced for 10 or 15 minutes, but slowly the host started to take control and when they scored the 1-0 (probably the goalkeeper was fouled) it was a rain of goals and scoring positions coming. The game ended 5-1 only because Godoy Cruz saved 2 or 3 very clear chances or it would have been a historic result.

Group 8 is lead by Nacional de Medellin (Colombia) with 6 points, followed by Universidad de Chile and Godoy Cruz with 3. Peñarol (Uruguay) who last year played the final, completes the group with 0 points (all played 2 games).

Velez was always the better team, but it took them a long time to break a focused Mexican team that ran a lot and showed good tactical order.

When it looked like it was getting too hard for Velez, with 20 minutes left they scored the 1-0 using a defensive distraction, and they closed the game with 2 more in only a couple of minutes when Chivas had already given up.

Velez now leads Group 7 with 6 points, followed by Defensor Sporting (Uruguay) with 3, while Deportivo Quito (Ecuador) and Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexico) have 1 (all with 2 games played).

The Copa Libertadores week will end today with Lanus visiting Olimpia @ Paraguay.

Round 3 of Clausura starts tomorrow !!

Copa Libertadores / Arsenal 3 - Zamora 0

Arsenal came back from the undeserved defeat in the first group game (0-1 @ Brazil vs Fluminense) with a clear and very easy win against Copa Libertadores debutant Zamora, from Venezuela.
Yes, the same team that one week ago played a good defensive game against the Apertura 2011 champion Boca couldn't hold against Arsenal.

The goal in the 1st minute (lucky bounce on a Venezuelan defender) helped the host to dominate a game they needed to win. The visitors obviously didn't have a plan B and collapsed, conceding twice more before the 1st half was over.

The 2nd part of the game was a waste of time, with Arsenal slowing down the pace of the game so they could rest for next weekend's visit to Velez for the 3rd round of Clausura, and Zamora not really knowing what to do.

Group 4 now has Arsenal (2 games played) and Fluminense (1 GP) with 3 points, while Boca (1 GP) and Zamora (2 GP) have 1.
Boca will host Fluminense on March 7 to close the 2nd round of the group.

Today Godoy Cruz will go to Chile to visit Universidad, while Velez will host Mexican team Chivas de Guadalajara.

Great win for Tigre who scored in the 1st minute of the game, something that made things a lot easier for them.
San Martin pushed, had a couple of chances but Tigre easily finished it in the 2nd half when they started to find spaces for counter attacks.
This win put them only 6 points behind San Lorenzo in the Averages table, while San Martin fells only one step above Union in the promotion playoffs zone (check www.ArgentinaPreviews.com to see the current tables).

On a side note, Colon's coach Mario Sciaqua was fired today. He will stay working with younger divisions, a job he used to have before getting the main coach job months ago.
His results overall might not have been bad, but the team never played good football and the start in Clausura with no goals scored and only 1 point gave them a bleak future ahead.
His replacement could be ex Argentina NT defender Roberto Sensini (recently coached Estudiantes and Newell's) or Mauricio Pellegrino (brother of Colon's defender Maximiliano Pellegrino) who was working as assistant coach for Rafa Benitez in Liverpool and Inter.

Round 3 will kick off next Friday with Newell's visiting Boca, the leader Lanus hosting San Martin and a duel of very needed teams in Estudiantes - Independiente.

Round 3 Schedule:

Friday February 24
19.10-- Belgrano de Córdoba-Unión de Santa Fe
21.15-- Atlético Rafaela-All Boys

Saturday February 25
19.10-- Colón de Santa Fe-Olimpo de Bahía Blanca

Clausura 2012 - Round 2 - Saturday + Sunday - Lanus at the top

Saturday continue with some pretty entertaining games.

Newell's 1 - Argentinos Jrs 0

* Newell's definitely confirmed that there's an improvement from their last season team. They still have a problem: they lack a good scorer upfront, and this was the reason they won only by 1 goal and almost end the game with a scoreless draw. They were A LOT better than Argentinos and deserved to win by at least 2 or 3 goals.
Absolutely nothing from the visitors who lost a lot in attack with Santiago Salcedo's departure.

Arsenal 2 - Atletico Rafaela 2

* Great game and another one with many goals in this round between Arsenal and Rafaela. Twice Arsenal was leading and both times Rafaela got a deserved draw.
It could have been for any of them but in the end was a fair draw in a very entertaining match.

All Boys 2 - Colon 0

* All Boys took advantage of this very dull Colon, who is obviously headed to another disappointing semester.
The match was not a good one, especially because the host scored very early and got a red card in the last minute of the 1st half so they decided to try to hold to it while Colon was simply harmless in offense even though they were playing against 10 men during the whole 2nd half.
In the last minute All Boys scored the 2-0 on a counter attack and took 3 very important points.

Sunday was not as good as Saturday.

Estudiantes 1 - San Lorenzo 1

* Estudiantes played such a poor game that they made San Lorenzo look good, and being a San
Lorenzo fan I'm saying this as unbiased as possible.
San Lorenzo played better, had the ball and even though the nervousness made them a little harmless in offense they definitely deserved the 3 points.
Estudiantes showed NOTHING. Their goal was a huge mistake by San Lorenzo's goalkeeper and their only chance was a save by the goalkeeper in the 2nd half. The rest of the 90 mintues they almost didn't shot at goal.
I'm not fully giving up on them because Veron was not available today and Enzo Perez only played some minutes from the bench while he gets in shape, but they better show something soon or it will be another disappointing semester.
After last week's 1-4 at Lanus and with a depleted defense I was expecting much less from San Lorenzo so it was a good surprise to see an overall solid game that was unfortunately ruined by that goalkeeper mistake.

Independiente 0 - Lanus 1

* Independiente couldn't dominate a mixed Lanus lineup. They played as dull as usual and ended paying in the last minutes.
They will win some games here and there, but unless some miracle happens I can't see them fighting in the top places.
And to make it worst fans are losing the little patience they had with some players after two defeats in 2 games.
Great win for Lanus, the only leader of Clausura.

Godoy Cruz 1 - Racing 0

* Exactly the same could be said about Racing.
They are the same awful team as last year, slow, boring...and it's becoming obvious that some players that shined not long ago, were probably not that good.
Godoy Cruz with very little took the 3 points on a late goal and I can't imagine how is Racing going to change this.

Union 0 - Boca 0

* Once again nothing to say about Boca. The game was exactly as expected. A booooring 0-0, especially in the 2nd half.
Riquelme said after the game that after 2 rounds they have 4 points as they had in Apertura (back then they beat Union at home and drew @ Olimpo) and they are in a 32 games undefeated streak so there's nothing to worry about...but if they continue playing like this it will be a matter of time before this streak is over.

The 2nd round will end today with Tigre hosting San Martin in a key game for the Averages table.

Free Preview !!! Newell's - Argentinos Jrs today !!

The Free Preview sponsored by www.ACBET.com is here !!

Download here: http://bit.ly/zhWR6c

The game is Newell's - Argentinos Jrs that starts in 3 hours, my bet is the straight home win @ 2.10 with mid stakes.

Good Luck !!!

UPDATE: Another beautiful day for the free preview, not only winning the bet but even hitting the predicted score. 100% fair win for Newell's who should have scored earlier and more.
I hope you found it useful !!

Clausura 2012 - Round 2 Friday - It's raining goals !!!

What a beautiful night full of goals.
In 2 games we had 9 goals, more than half of what we had in the whole 1st round (15) !!!

Olimpo 4 - Belgrano 1

Fair win for Olimpo, without a doubt. They started the game better and when Belgrano was starting to balance it, they scored the 1st goal (hand ball that the referee didn't see).
The last minutes of the 1st half were crazy: red card for Belgrano (another referee mistake IMO) and 1 minute later a penalty for them (another strange decision) !!
But the 2nd half was all for Olimpo who knew how to take advantage of having one more men on the field and even if the 3 goals difference was probably too much, it was a deserved 3 points for them.

Banfield 0 - Velez 4

Velez once again confirmed they are candidates to take this league, in case anyone thought they might not be really focused.
And that thing I said about giving some credit to Banfield...well, forget it. They fought and played as equals for 15-20 minutes but once Velez got the ball and scored the 1-0...poor Banfield.
If the visitors hadn't slow down after the 3rd goal, it could have been a massacre.

-----

Round 2 will continue today with 3 matches that honestly don't look like interesting games to watch (2nd division games today look really fun to watch actually, especially Gimnasia-Rosario Central), but the same thing I thought about Olimpo-Belgrano, so maybe he have a couple of surprises...

17.00-- Newell´s Old Boys-Argentinos Juniors
19.10-- Arsenal F.C.-Atlético Rafaela
21.10-- All Boys-Colón de Santa Fe

Breaking News !!!! Boca's coach Julio Falcioni resigned ??

Boca coach Julio Cesar Falcioni has resigned after a big discussion with Boca leader and super diva Juan Roman Riquelme, apparently because of the team's lack of offensive ambitions.
There is still room for negotiations between him, the players and the club board but most reports say that he has resigned for good.

The relation between them was bad since long ago (both have very strong personalities) but it looks it got even worst after last night's awful performance (check the report below).

Probably not a bad decision by Falcioni who decided to leave before Riquelme and company started to look "less interested" and got him fired due to bad results, something that has happened before not only in Boca but probably in most teams in the world.

Expect an update later today when the news are confirmed or if they somehow reach an agreement and he stays.

UPDATE (11.25pm):
Latest news say that after a 2 hours meeting between Falcioni and the club board, the coach would stay but depending on certain conditions.
The argument was apparently not only with Riquelme but also with other players, which would make the coexistence very difficult and if there's something certain is that this history will have more chapters.

Copa Libertadores / Zamora 0 - Boca 0 / ZZzzzzzzzz...

Any normal human being, Boca fan or not, probably needed between 3 and 4 cups of coffee to stay awake through this unbelievable boring game.
Boca did it again. Slow game, they had the ball probably 70% of the match but couldn't break the defense of a weak Venezuelan team who was playing their first Copa Libertadores ever.
It took 90 minutes for Boca to create a real scoring position when ex Velez and Fiorentina striker Santiago Silva, playing his 1st game for Boca, hit the post with a header that looked like the winning goal.

Group 4 is completed with Arsenal and Fluminense (the Brazilian team won 1-0 at home in the other 1st game of the group) so everything is still open but after today's game it was obvious that Boca will need to improve if they want to be candidates to win this tournament for a 6th time (the last one in 2007).

Tomorrow Lanus will make its debut at home against Brazilian giant Flamengo, and on Thursday the last Argentinean team, Godoy Cruz, will debut at home against 5 times Copa Libertadores champion Peñarol.

Clausura 2012 - Round 1 - Right where we left

If you enjoyed Sunday's free preview, join Argentina Previews paid service now and get all the information for Clausura 2012 + Copa Libertadores !
Contact me at mncarg@gmail.com soon for service and fee details !!

Round 1 is gone and as a short analysis I could say that most teams continued from where they left last year.
Squads didn't change much except for very few cases so probably nothing different should be expected by now, but we'll see what happens when some teams start committing to Copa Libertadores and they rotate players.

On a curious note in this round there were no away wins, something that didn't happen since...round 10 of Clausura 2011 !! That's 28 rounds ago !!!

* Boca's game couldn't have been more exactly as expected.
Slow start by the hosts, Olimpo trying something...until the Apertura champion scored (the guy that made the pass with a header was in offside) and game over for Olimpo.
Riquelme made the difference for Boca, who looked exactly the same as in 2011: they won't amaze you, but they are as solid as it gets.

* I wish I didn't have to write about Lanus's 4-1 against "my" San Lorenzo.
Devastating defeat in a match that was decided before the 20th minute. San Lorenzo's defense was simple non existant and I wonder how bad can it get if we keep playing like this.
For Lanus it was probably the easiest win they will get in Clausura. As weird as it might sound, they didn't play brilliant football; they simply took advantage of some awful defensive mistakes and slowed down when the game was already decided.

* Disappointing performance by Estudiantes, who looked more like the one in the first rounds of Apertura than the good team they were in the last ones.
Newell's looked improve tactically (expected with Martino as the new coach) but still Estudiantes ended the 1st half playing better and scoring the 1-0.
When it looked like they were going to stay in control, they had their fatal minute early in the 2nd half: Newell's scored the 1-1 and then Juan Sebastian Veron got injured and had to be replaced.

* Not much to say about the scoreless draw between Belgrano and All Boys. The hosts were better, could have won it because they had the best chances to score, but in the end the 0-0 was absolutely fair.
Same thing for Colon - Arsenal, Racing - Tigre and Argentinos Jrs - Union.
In all of these games the hosts were better, but not enough to win it and the draws were fair as well.

* San Martin was never better than Independiente but they scored early in the 2nd half and that was enough for them to keep their good streak and climb more in the Averages table.

* Solid win by Rafaela (as you saw in the free preview of this round) but the 3-0 was a huge result according to the game flow.
Brilliant game by Rafaela's goalkeeper who saved his team more than once, but the visitors didn't have the same luck and conceded easily.

* Velez should have won but some bad luck and some bad referee decisions (they were not given a very clear penalty and a doubtful one) made them get only 1 point.
Godoy Cruz played a defensive game, something strange in them but probably something that new coach Nery Pumpido is testing.

Copa Libertadores starts...and Clausura 2012 is only 3 days away !

Copa Libertadores's groups stage will start today and will have the debut of one of the candidates, Velez, who will try to revenge their last year elimination in semifinals.
They will visit Uruguayan team Defensor Sporting in what should be their easiest away game in this competition.

Arsenal, who got easily through the 1st stage against Peruvian Sport Huancayo, will have a very difficult visit to Brazilian giant Fluminense.
The other Argentinean teams participating in this international competition are Boca, Lanus and Godoy Cruz, and all will debut next week after playing the 1st round of Clausura 2012 this next weekend.

Thanks to our Wikipedia friends, you can see the whole groups stage schedule here:
