Clausura 2011 Round 10 - Draws and more draws

Nine rounds to go in Clausura, don't miss the best previews for every game of Argentinean football !! Contact me at mncarg@gmail.com for further details.

The main characteristic of the 10th round was that unlike previous rounds we didn't have any away winners, just five home wins and five draws where, except Racing, most teams fighting in the top places were involved.

* Racing was the big winner of this round. They dominated the derby and left no doubts that they deserved to win it. Independiente looked like a shy team, played really poor and even his coach admitted after the game that Racing's win had been completely fair. Racing should use the morale boost that comes after winning a game like this to win some more games and maybe fight for the championship.

*Another "reborn" team is All Boys, who won their 2nd consecutive game and this time they scored 3 goals, two of them by "Fat" Fabbiani who didn't look any thinner but was key for his team before leaving injured after HT. Huracan's good streak under new coach Roberto Pompei seems to be over and now they have to think again about not falling in a direct relegation place.

* Olimpo decided this year that if they were going be relegated they would die fighting, and week after week they are showing they want to stay in 1st division. Very good game vs last champion Estudiantes and a fair result that could have been a home win if it wasn't because of a very silly own goal when they were leading 1-0 and Estudiantes couldn't find a way to score.

* Gimnasia and River played a dull, boring scoreless draw. Both were too afraid to lose and were happy enough with one point. River is still the only leader of Clausura, but followed closely by Velez and many others.

* Colon improved from previous games and cut the losing streak at home, but a defensive distraction in the 93rd minute made them get only 1 point when Velez was looking really tired.

* Really great game at Boca in the 3-3 vs Tigre, who dominated during most of the 2nd half. Boca was saved by a long shot with 10 minutes left but they are already out of the championship for another semester and with a bleak future ahead.

* On Wednesday, the 84 minutes left of the suspended game between Velez and San Lorenzo because of the death of a San Lorenzo fan by police brutality will be completed. There will be two halves of 42 minutes each. The game will be played at Boca stadium (neutral ground) and behind closed doors. If Velez draws they will reach River at the top, or will be the only leader if they win.

Clausura 2011 Round 9 - Half Done

We've reached almost half of the tournament and of course things are not clear at all, but this round 2 teams standed out as possible candidates : River and Velez. Especially the 2nd one, who played a great game vs Newell's that ended only 2-0 because the visitor's goalkeeper was on one of his best nights and saved his team from a bigger defeat. After the game Newell's coach resigned as did Colon's on Saturday.

* River also won and although they didn't shine like Velez, it was a deserved one and they are the only leaders of Clausura, with one game more played.

* The ex-leader Estudiantes failed to win again. They were just slightly better than a San Lorenzo that, as expected, went for the draw and got it. Estudiantes didn't try much anyway, so the scoreless draw was not far from a fair result in such a boring game.

*Another useless draw was the 0-0 between Huracan - Racing. Game went pretty much as expected : very intense, Huracan playing a little better, but overall the draw was a fair result.
Racing won only 1 of the last 15 points and once again they ended leaving many doubts to their fans about the real potential of this team. For Huracan the draw was a poor result because Olimpo won earlier and took a bigger difference from them in the Averages table.

* Boca is back to normal. Awful awful game by them. Harmless in offense, hopeless as always in defense...they are 8 points behind River and unless they win 3 or 4 games in a row they have nothing to play for. Lanus was far from a good performance, but with very little was enough to win.

* All Boys scored a goal and won ! It took them 6 rounds to finally score again, and of course they suffered a lot, but Tigre couldn't find a way to get the draw and the relegation fight now is very interesting with Olimpo and All Boys tied in one of the promotion playoff places.

* Good win for Independiente. The 3 goals difference was too much, but they got a deserved win because of what they did in the 1st half. When Godoy was playing better, Independiente scored the 1-0 in the 2nd half, they didn't let Godoy react and finished them with 2 counter attacks.

Next week's main games are the derby between Racing and Independiente (one of the biggest in the league behind River-Boca), the leader River visits Gimnasia, Velez goes to Santa Fe to play vs Colon (whith a interim coach probably) and a huge game for the Averages table between All Boys and Huracan.

Round 9 results :

8/4 — Estudiantes de La Plata 0 – 0 San Lorenzo
8/4 — Independiente 3 – 0 Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba
9/4 — Colón de Santa Fe 0 – 2 Olimpo de Bahía Blanca
9/4 — Arsenal F.C. 2 – 2 Quilmes A.C.
9/4 — Huracán 0 – 0 Racing Club
9/4 — River Plate 1 – 0 Banfield
10/4 — Argentinos Juniors 1 – 1 Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata
10/4 — Lanús 2 – 0 Boca Juniors
10/4 — Tigre 0 – 1 All Boys
10/4 — Vélez Sarsfield 2 – 0 Newell´s Old Boys

Clausura 2011 Round 8 - 10 in 3

* Unbelievable parity in Clausura 2011. We'll be soon reaching the half of the tournament and while Estudiantes and River are the leaders with 15 points, there are 8 more teams behind them within 3 points !!! Velez (14 points) and San Lorenzo (13 points) have one game less played (will be completed on April 20) so they would have the chance to be to be the only leader.

* Good and 2nd win in a row for Boca. Deserved ? Well, they played a little better than Estudiantes in the 1st half, and the 2nd was completely dull and boring. They had a goal disallowed with a bad called offside, and in the last minute of the game scored a nice goal to get the 3 points. Estudiantes looked tired in the 2nd half and they tried to hold to the draw like they did many times, but it didn't work.

* River played a good 1st half, scored a great goal and then as usual went back to defend. They could have scored a 2nd, but also could have ended with a draw because Quilmes missed two big chances. With this little football, River has joined Estudiantes at the top of the standings. Quilmes, sorry to be repetitive, is going to 2nd division.

* Unbelievable defeat for San lorenzo. In this 90 minutes they created more chances than the previous 3 games together (believe me, i counted them) but it was an awful day for their 3 strikers, and the replacements in defense didn't help at all. Two crosses, two goals and they kept missing chances in the 2nd half. But...because Estudiantes lost they are still 2 points from the top of Clausura and with one game less played.

* Velez is back on track and once again looking like championship candidates. Good win @ Olimpo even though they didn't have two of their best players, Moralez and Silva, taking advantage of the home team defensive mistakes.

* Racing started better but looking desperate to score soon and Tigre, after a couple of lucky saves, scored the 0-1. Of course this put Racing in a more desperate mood and even though they
deserved the 1-1, instead of a goal before HT they received a very silly red card. Few minutes into the 2nd half Tigre scored the 2nd, Racing got the 1-2 with 15 minutes left but only another
red card came. Racing still has a chance to fight for the championship, but they will have to calm down.

* On Friday Independiente got their luckiest game of this season in the 2-1 win in the last minute of the game @ Gimnasia, playing the last 25 minutes with 10 men. Gimnasia doesn't win when they play bad, but they don't win either when they are better than their rivals.

Round 9 has some interesting games. Estudiantes will open the round hosting San Lorenzo, the other leader River at home vs Banfield, Boca visiting Lanus looking to win the 3rd in a row and the undefeated Argentinos Juniors vs the struggling Gimnasia. Also Tigre - All Boys will play another very important game for the Averages table.

Round 8 results :

01/04 Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata 1 – 2 Independiente
01/04 Banfield 0 – 2 Argentinos Juniors
02/04 All Boys 0 – 0 Lanús
