* Boca finally broke the spell, scoring a goal and winning a game after 4 rounds.
The win was important but difficult to rate, because Colon played again an AWFUL game. They looked weak in every line and as a San Lorenzo fan I'm really happy that they will be our next rival next Sunday.
Boca didn't show anything special. They started the game afraid to lose and as minutes went by they realized that they had no rival in front and tried a little more in attack.
They missed a couple of good chances in the first half and after 15 minutes in the 2nd when nothing was happening, Riquelme (was playing a poor game until then) scored a great goal from a free kick and it was game over for this extremely poor Colon.

* Estudiantes is the new leader. They made it easy and won 3-0 vs a disoriented All Boys, who lost their 4th game in a row and for the 5th consecutive game couldn't score a goal (also the 6th time in 7 Clausura games).
The first two goals were own goals, but Estudiantes dominated and won deservedly in a game that during some time they played like it was just a training session for them.

* Good win for San Lorenzo in a very balanced game vs the until then leader Olimpo.
It was a boring game and a draw could have been fair, but San Lorenzo always looked a little better and more interested in getting the 3 points. They are now only 2 points behind Estudiantes and with the Velez game pending. Only one third of the tournament gone, so i promise to remain as calmed as possible about my team's chances of winning the championship :)

* Crazy game for Racing. They ended the 1st half with a good 0-1 lead and started the 2nd half pretty much in control. They even could have scored the 0-2 in a couple of counter attacks.
But in less than 10 minutes Lanus scored twice (both with a little help from Racing's goalkeeper) and changed the course of a game that looked completely different. Racing showed no reaction
and made things easy for Lanus's counter attacks. Racing is still only 3 points behind the leader Estudiantes, but they've lost 2 in a row and they don't look as mentally solid as they did
2 weeks ago.

* The round also left a good win by Velez, third in a row for them, also a good one for River who starts to take some distance from the promotion playoffs teams, and a key win for Huracan vs Gimnasia, who keeps sinking in the averages table.

Next round will have the leader Estudiantes visiting Boca and 2nd placed San Lorenzo hosting Colon.

Besides the tragedy that I wrote about on Monday, there was also football this weekend.

* Olimpo is the new leader of the tournament. Completely unexpected, and a huge surprise, but nobody can say they have points they don't deserved to get. For the first time ever in 14 games they beat Boca and they are temporarily out of the relegation places of the Averages table.
For Boca it was the 4th consecutive game without scoring a goal and the 3rd defeat in a row. They have only 4 points and the fans left their stadium extremely angry with the coach and the club board.

* Racing is now the former leader because they were not able to beat the last champion, Estudiantes, at home. They were better but couldn't score, and with few minutes left Rodrigo Lopez scored an amazing goal to get the 3 points and leave Racing empty handed after 3 consecutive wins.

*The only undefeated team is Argentinos Juniors, who got their 2nd consecutive win after 4 draws in the first 4 rounds, and joine the group of 8 teams separated by only 3 points.

* The fight to avoid relegation is as interesting as it can be. While Quilmes needs almost a miracle to avoid playing next season in 2nd division, Gimnasia and Huracan will play like a final this Saturday as they are only separated by 3 points.
Also All Boys with their 3rd consecutive lost game has joined the group of teams (Tigre, Independiente, River and Olimpo) that is trying to avoid the promotion playoffs.

The complete results of the 6th round :

19/3 — All Boys 0 – 2 Colón de Santa Fe
19/3 — Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba 2 – 0 Lanús
19/3 — Quilmes A. C. 1 – 1 Independiente
19/3 — Arsenal F. C. 1 – 1 River Plate
20/3 — Newell’s Old Boys 0 – 2 Argentinos Juniors
20/3 — Vélez Sarsfield vs San Lorenzo (Suspended after 7 minutes, will be completed on 20/4 or 27/4)
20/3 — Racing Club 0 – 1 Estudiantes de La Plata

Another tragedy

Very sad day for football fans in Argentina (and i could say for our whole society) because as probably some of you already know, a San Lorenzo fan died apparently due to police brutality before the Velez - San Lorenzo game, outside the stadium.
This led to San Lorenzo fans to make riots when only 7 minuted had been played and the game was obviously suspended.
Three years ago it was a Velez fan that died before a San Lorenzo - Velez game, but in a fight between fans, and there were also fights again this time.

What's sad too is that this game was going to be played without away fans, but the clubs pushed for away fans to be allowed in the game and it ended in this tragedy.

We can only hope that this will be the last football related death in Argentina, but too many things would have to change and even the most optimistic know that this won't happen soon.

The game would be completed in neutral ground and behind closed doors in a future date to be determined.

Clausura 2011 Round 5 - Super Racing

* Clausura now has only 1 leader and it's Racing, who won their 3rd consecutive game, a great 4-0 at Colon. They have scored 10 goals in this last 3 rounds and they are looking like a championship candidate.

* The last champion, Estudiantes, lost again at home, 0-1 vs Godoy Cruz and this was their 2nd consecutive defeat at home, something that didn't happen since 2002 !
They looked tired and fans are not happy with new coach Eduardo Berizzo. End of an era for Estudiantes ?

* The big derby of the round was won by San Lorenzo, 1-0 in a very poor game against Boca (yeah! the H2H is now 69-60 on San Lorenzo favour) who can't find the bottom of this crisis and it's unknown how long will coach Julio Cesar Falcioni last in his job.

* Velez finally won their first game of Clausura, thanks to a huge mistake by young River goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola, and so did Independiente, crushing Newell's with a 4-0 that brought some peace after a very tough start of 2011.

This were the complete results of the 5th round :

Olimpo de Bahía Blanca 1 – 0 All Boys
Tigre 1 – 2 Banfield
Lanús 0 – 0 Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata
Argentinos Juniors 1 – 0 Arsenal F.C.
San Lorenzo 1 – 0 Boca Juniors
Estudiantes de La Plata 0 – 1 Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba
Colón de Santa Fe 0 – 4 Racing Club
River Plate 1 -2 Vélez Sarsfield
Huracán 2 – 1 Quilmes A. C.
Independiente 4 – 0 Newell’s Old Boys

The 6th round will have an outstanding game in Racing hosting Estudiantes, and a big new rivalry between Velez and San Lorenzo :

Saturday March 19
14.00--Quilmes A.C.-Independiente
16.10--Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba-Lanús
18.20--All Boys-Colón de Santa Fe
19.10--Arsenal F.C. - River Plate

Sunday March 20
14.00--Newell´s Old Boys-Argentinos Juniors
16.00--Vélez Sarsfield-San Lorenzo

20.15--Boca Juniors-Olimpo de Bahía Blanca

Busy week around so I don't have much time for a full review of the round as usual but I didn't want to let my readers without an update.

To make a short summary of the 4th round of Clausura 2011 :

* Racing + Estudiantes (won the derby 2-0 @ Gimnasia) are the leaders.

* Quilmes lost again, this time with 11 players vs Tigre's 10 for 85 minutes and coach Leonardo Madelon resigned. He will be replaced by Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, who was coaching Tigre until December and is known for his defensive tactics.

* Velez won their first game of Clausura, and it was against the struggling Boca who is still a time bomb that might explode this next weekend if they lose the derby @ San Lorenzo.

* Independiente is another time bomb. They won only 2 of 23 games this season and they are too close to the promotion playoff places of the Averages table. It's unbelievable that they won Copa Sudamericana only 3 months ago and that they are playing Copa Libertadores now.

Complete results of the 4th round :

All Boys 0 -San Lorenzo 3
Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata 0 -Estudiantes de La Plata 2
Newell's Old Boys 3 -Huracán 3
Racing Club 4 -Olimpo de Bahía Blanca 3
Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba 2 - Colón de Santa Fe 3

Clausura 2011 Round 3 - Worried Leaders

You still have 16 rounds left to get the best previews and information about Argentinean football and Copa Libertadores. Email me at mncarg@gmail.com for further details !!

It probably can happen only in this league : the two leaders, Olimpo and River, are at the same time at the top of the standings and fighting to avoid the promotion playoffs at the bottom of the Averages table.
There's still a long way to go in Clausura but it's still a very funny situation.

The round started with a crazy Friday.
Gimnasia won their first game of 2011, playing away after 14 games without winning outside their stadium, and scored 3 goals as visitors for the first time since 2006 !! (88 games)
At the same time, Olimpo was cruising 2-0 at HT vs Godoy Cruz reserves, 20 minutes later they were 2-3 and in the 94th minute got the 3-3 to save the day.

Good win for Lanus, although maybe a little short in the score because they were definitely better than Quilmes. Offensive midfielder Diego Valeri, who is also the top scorer of the league, is definitely the player to watch so far in this Clausura 2011.
He was one of the best players in the team that won Apertura 2007 and in 2009 was sold to Porto, where he didn't play much and neither did in Almeria last year. Now back in Lanus he seems to be back from where he left, and on Saturday he scored both Lanus's goals in his 100th game in 1st division.
Check here, worth watching specially the 1st one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxE35_3IGH4

Very disappointing performance by San Lorenzo who deserved to lose. The 1-0 came from a corner, and after it they played their worst game of Clausura so far just giving the ball to Racing so it was matter of time until the visitors scored like they did.

Boca deserved a little better luck and could have won it, but all Boys fought to get a draw and played the whole 90 minutes only focused on that. Finally they left with their objective complete, and Boca is a time bomb as fans protested against coach Julio Cesar Falcioni's decision to leave playmaker Riquelme out of the team.

Estudiantes finally lost a home game after 16 matches. It can't be said it was really deserved, but Banfield fought for it and Estudiantes left a little worried because even though they won 2 of 3 in the league, they are not playing as the champion team and they have a tough schedule ahead with the league and Copa Libertadores, starting next Saturday with the HUGE derby vs Gimnasia.

Velez doesn't look neither like the team they were only a couple of months ago. Leading 1-0, and against 10 men of Argentinos Juniors, who had played Copa Libertadores 72 hours before the league game they were not able to manage the ball and had to settle with a 1-1 and no wins in the 3 rounds of the league.

Big win for River in the last minute of the derby @ Independiente who keeps sinking in the Averages table and they are now really worried about the future.
16 points in the season, only 2 wins in 22 games this season, none in the last 13 games and now River is only 1 point behind them in the Averages table !

The final games of round 3 confirmed that Huracan will need a miracle to avoid playing the promotion playoffs or going directlyto 2nd division. They had a huge chance to win it in the end, but they were also lucky that Arsenal didn't seem to be much interested in winning it, because they missed lots of counter attacks.

Intense game between Tigre and Newells, and the home team was a deserved winner. There's no doubts that this are two very irregular teams and anything (well, except good football) can be expected from them.

Round 3 results :

Colón 1 - Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 3
Olimpo de Bahía Blanca 3 - Godoy Cruz
3
Lanús 2 - Quilmes A.C. 1
San Lorenzo 1 -Racing Club 2
Boca Juniors 0 -All Boys 0

Estudiantes de La Plata 0 - Banfield 1
Argentinos Juniors 1 -Vélez Sarsfield 1
Independiente 0 -River Plate 1

Huracán 1 - Arsenal F.C. 1
Tigre 1 - Newell´s OId Boys 0
