If the 1-4 of Godoy Cruz @ Boca was not enough, this week we had Velez losing their first home game of the season, and against All Boys, a team that had never win away so far !!
It can't be said that All Boys win was fair because Velez did enough to deserve at least a draw, but they looked too tired in the 2nd half, probably because of the midweek Copa Libertadores game.

Another team that felt the effort of playing in midweek was Godoy Cruz, who after the win in the 1st round and the 2-1 vs LDU de Quito in their first international game, lost 0-2 at home vs San Lorenzo, playing probably one of their worst games of the season and almost not shooting at goal in the 2nd half.

The league has now 2 leaders, the only teams with a perfect record : Olimpo and Estudiantes.
Olimpo took a very important win, 3-1 @ Gimnasia, and they are temporarily out of the relegation zone of the averages table for the first time this season !!
On the other hand, Gimnasia took that place and their situation keeps getting worse.

Estudiantes had a no sweat victory @ Quilmes, who keeps sinking in the averages table and played 60 minutes with 10 men, what made things even easier for the last champion who rested Juan Sebastian Veron for their Copa Libertadores game on Wednesday.

The boring games of the weekend were the awful 0-0 between Argentinos Juniors and Independiente, and the Racing - Boca derby won by the visitors as their recovered from the big defeat of the 1st round. Both teams missed their playmakers and star players and this was one of the main reasons why the game was awfully played.

This are the complete results of the 2nd round :

Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 1 - Olimpo de Bahía Blanca 3
Banfield 1 - Colón de Santa Fe 1
Argentinos Juniors 0 - Independiente 0
Newell’s Old Boys 2 - Lanús 1
Vélez Sarsfield 1 - All Boys 2
Racing Club 0 - Boca Juniors 1
Quilmes A.C. 0 - Estudiantes de La Plata 1
River Plate 2 - Huracán 0
Arsenal 2 - Tigre 0
Godoy Cruz 0 -San Lorenzo 2

Clausura 2011 1st Round - The Usual Suspects

Clausura finally started and with some very interesting games, goals in the last minute and a couple of surprises. Some teams, for good or bad, seem to be still in 2010.

Boca, for example, pointed by every journalist as the Clausura champion even before it started, had a nightmarish debut and lost 1-4 at home vs Godoy Cruz, a team that was one of the best of 2010 but renewed their whole offense during the preseason, but were still too much for a Boca that played well in offense, but made every mistake possible in defense, including a little gift of young goalkeeper Javier Garcia for the 0-1.

Now Boca will have to recover in next week's derby where they will visit Racing, who had a great win 1-0 @ All Boys in a game that seemed more a battle than a football match because of the many hard fouls both teams made.

Estudiantes, the champion of last Apertura, showed another solid performance and easily beat Newell's 2-1. The first half was all Estudiantes and could have ended 3-0 but they missed a penalty kick.
With the easy 2-0 they relaxed through the 2nd half and the visitors were able to score only in the last minute when the game was already decided.

The 2nd placed team of Apertura, Velez, had a slow start visiting Independiente. The home team was 2-0 at HT but Velez was able to make a great come back and got a 2-2 draw with a goal by striker Juan Manuel Martinez, who only 2 days earlier had been playing a few minutes for the Argentina NT in a friendly against Portgual.

Nothing changed for River. With only one new player (Bordagaray, will probably be a reserve for most of this semester) not much could be expected from them and they confirmed it by only drawing 0-0 in their visit to Tigre. It looks like another long semester for both teams, who are fighting in the lower half of the Averages table.

Two teams that have many new faces and could be celebrating in June when Clausura starts are San Lorenzo and Lanus.
El "Ciclon" played a good game at home but missed many chances and Gimnasia took a draw from them with a bad called penalty kick.
Something similar could have happened to Lanus, who was superior to Arsenal but were only drawing 1-1, until they scored twice in the additional minutes and took a late 3-1 win.

The complete results of Round 1 were :

Estudiantes de La Plata 2 -Newell's Old Boys 1
Independiente 2 -Vélez Sársfield 2
Olimpo de Bahía Blanca 2 -Banfield 1
San Lorenzo 1 -Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 1
Colón de Santa Fe 2 -Quilmes A.C. 0
All Boys 0 -Racing Club 1
Boca Juniors 1 -Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba 4
Tigre 0 -River Plate 0
Lanús 3 -Arsenal F.C. 1
Huracán 1 -Argentinos Juniors 1

Argentina - Portugal / Messi vs CR !

There will be many games involving the two best players in the world (ok ok, maybe Cristiano is only a top 5) and all the others will be more important than this one (Copa del Rey final, the derby in the spanish league, maybe a Champions League final ?), but it still has to be worth watching.

Argentina's coach, Sergio Batista decided not to call Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero and he didn't give reasons, but the closeness that this players have to the previous coach, Diego Maradona, could be one of the reasons. Batista didn't talk about it with the media, but it's very possible that they will be called for future friendlies and the Copa America that will be played next July @ Argentina.

The 23 players training @ Geneva, Switzerland, are :

Goalkeepers : Sergio Romero - Az Alkmaar - Holland, Mariano Andújar - Catania - Italy

Defenders : Pablo Zabaleta - Manchester City - England, Javier Zanetti - Internazionale de Milán - Italy, Nicolás Pareja - Spartak de Moscú - Russia, Ezequiel Garay - Real Madrid - Spain, Gabriel Milito - Barcelona - Spain, Nicolás Burdisso - Roma - Italy, Nicolás Otamendi - Porto - Portugal, Marcos Rojo - Spartak de Moscú - Russia,

Midfielders : Javier Mascherano - Barcelona - Spain, Esteban Cambiasso - Internazionale de Milán - Italy, Fernando Gago - Real Madrid - Spain, Ever Banega - Valencia - Spain, Lucas Biglia - Anderlecht - Belgium, José Sosa - Nápoli - Italy, Javier Pastore - Palermo - Italy

Strikers : Ezequiel Lavezzi - Nápoli - Italy, Lionel Messi - Barcelona - Spain, Ángel Di María - Real Madrid - Spain, Nicolás Gaitán - Benfica - Portugal, Juan Manuel Martínez - Vélez Sarsfield - Argentina, Cristian Chávez - Boca Juniors - Argentina

Diego Milito was called, but the injury he suffered last Sunday playing for Inter made him stay at home.

A probable lineup, with a strong offense and a not so good defense as lately happens with the Argentina NT, would be :

Romero - Zanetti, Burdisso, Milito, Rojo - Banega, Mascherano, Cambiasso - Lavezzi, Messi, Di María.

Portugal, without the injured Ricardo Carvalho, would have :

Eduardo - Bosingwa, Rolando, Bruno Alves, Fabio Coentrao - Meireles, Martins, Moutinho - Ronaldo, Postiga, Nani.

Definitely one of the friendlies to watch this Wednesday, and hopefully they will live up to expectations.

Transfer Market News 4/2

Only one week left for the start of Clausura 2011 !!! What are you waiting to contact me and get the best info of Argentinean football and previews of every game of this semester ? Email me ASAP at mncarg@gmail.com for details.

* This Sunday we'll have a preview of what's next as Independiente will host Tigre in a pending game of last year Apertura 18th round, postponed because the hosts were playing the Copa Sudamericana final.
Independiente has advanced this week to the groups stage of Copa Libertadores and will debut in 3 weeks, hosting Peñarol from Uruguay.

* The surprise of the week came on Wednesday when Estudiantes's coach, Alejandro Sabella, decided to leave the team. No reasons were reveleaded, but apparently he wasn't happy with the few new players added as he felt that they were not going to be able to play both Clausura and Copa Libertadores with this short squad.
Sabella lead them to win Copa Libertadores in 2009 and last Apertura less than 2 months ago, and now Estudiantes will have to find a new coach less than 1 week before Clausura starts.

Two of the top transfers of this Summer in Argentina were finally closed this week :

* Boca bought great left attacking Walter Ervitti from Banfield, and all eyes will be on them as one of the main candidates to win the league after some awful performances in 2009 and 2010.
If Juan Roman Riquelme can stay healthy, they could make a very interesting offensive midfield with Ervitti and ex Velez Leandro Somoza, which could definitely be a big improvement from last year's team.

* San Lorenzo has added Argentinos Juniors captain and best player, midfielder Nestor Ortigoza, who also played for Paraguay in last year's World Cup. He was the leader of the team that won Clausura 2010 and should make a difference for San Lorenzo, who showed very little football in the Summer friendlies.
News were not good at all for Argentinos Juniors's fans because in 5 days they debut in Copa Libertadores and their chances of having a good tournament received a big hit.

* One signing that went under the radar but it could turn out to be very interesting, is ex-Juventus Mauro Camoranesi, 34 years old, signing for Lanus. The 2006 World Champion (he played 55 games with Italy's NT) returns to Argentinean football after 12 years. He left Banfield in 1998 and played for Mexican Cruz Azul, Italy's Verona and then 9 years for Italian giant Juventus. Last year he played a few games for Stuttgart.

* Next Wednesday we'll have the first CR vs Messi of the year, when Argentina and Portugal meet in a friendly game at Switzerland. Expect some info about that game in the blog early next week.

Enjoy your weekend !

Boca - River @ Mendoza

For some people might be only a friendly, but for River and Boca fans it's much more than that.
Boca has been the king of the Summer friendlies so far even though playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme wasn't able to play because he didn't want to risk getting injured again, and he won't be in tonight's game either.
Neither will be new Boca player Walter Ervitti, a very skilled attacking midfielder that was acquired from Banfield this week.
Coach Julio Cesar Falcioni will use the same lineup that played a very solid game against San Lorenzo last Saturday beating them 3-0 that could have been more.
Young midfielder Nicolas Colazo and Cristian Chavez have been playing great together with ex Velez Leandro Somoza and ex San Lorenzo Diego Rivero.

On the other hand, River's Summer was not as easy as Boca's.
After losing 1-3 vs Racing and 0-2 vs Boca in the first SuperClasico of 2011, they finally were able to get a 0-0 draw vs last champion Estudiantes.
As last year, they didn't have many defensive issues, but they lack of a powerful offense because young Erik Lamela or Manuel Lanzini might have a bright future ahead, but they still have a lot to learn.
The injury of goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo that will make him miss the next 2 months don't help them either, and like in the Estudiantes game, 20 years old Leandro Chichizola will be his replacement.

Boca looks like a favourite to get this Super Clasico, but derbies are special games and anything can happen in this game that will definitely be something to watch.

Probable formations :

River Plate (4-4-2): Leandro Chichizola; Jonatan Maidana, Alexis Ferrero, Adalberto Román y Juan Manuel Díaz; Roberto Pereyra, Walter Acevedo, Matías Almeyda (captain) y Erik Lamela; Diego Buonanotte y Mariano Pavone. Coach : Juan José López.
Reserves: Daniel Vega, Paulo Ferrari, Carlos Arano, Facundo Quignón, Facundo Affranchino, Manuel Lanzini, Fabián Bordagaray y Leandro Caruso.

Boca Juniors (4-4-2): Javier García; José María Calvo, Matías Caruzzo, Juan Manuel Insaurralde y Clemente Rodríguez; Cristian Chávez, Diego Rivero, Leandro Somoza y Nicolás Colazo; Martín Palermo (captain) y Pablo Mouche. Coach : Julio César Falcioni.
Reserves: Cristian Lucchetti, Gastón Sauro, Enzo Ruiz, Luciano Fabián Monzón, Jesús Méndez, Juan Sánchez Miño, Ricardo Noir y Lucas Viatri.
