Transfer Market News 18/1 + Summer Friendlies

With 3 weeks left until the start of Clausura, we are having another poor market transfer with no big names either coming or leaving.

* Boca added two players in midfield : Velez's Leandro Somoza and San Lorenzo's Diego Rivero (in exchange for left midfielder Matias Gimenez). Both are very experienced players and should improve the team, but if Riquelme can't get healthy (he should be after playing only 1 and a half game in the last 8 months) their 2011 might not be much different from the very poor 2010 they had. They are still pushing to buy playmaker Walter Ervitti from Banfield, but negotiations seem to be very difficult.

* River's huge idol 36 years old Ariel Ortega left the team for the final time in his career after some problems with coach Juan Jose Lopez. Two days later he signed for All Boys and all eyes will be on him to see if he still has something left in his football career after a very irregular 2010.

* Independiente starts Copa Libertadores in less than 1 week, and their star acquisition is young striker Matias Defederico, an ex Huracan player who played very litle for Brazil's Corinthians in 2010. If he can be again the player that showed great skills in Huracan in 2009, he might be a great companion in offense for top scorer Andres Silvera.

* The champion Estudiantes also added an offensive player, ex San Lorenzo and Catania Pablo Barrientos, a very skilled midfielder that has struggled with injuries that last year but seems to be healthy from what he has shown in the first summer friendlies.

* Ex-Boca and Columbus Crew, 37 years old Guillermo Barros Schelotto, returned to Gimnasia, the team where he started his career 14 years ago. The club idol will have a big responsibility as he's expected to be the leader in a team that will have to work hard to avoid playing the promotion playoffs for the 3rd year in a row, or get into direct relegation.

* Some "official" summer friendlies have been played, with teams using mostly reserves so far. San Lorenzo started 2011 beating Independiente 3-2, Racing used a C team and lost 0-4 against Estudiantes, and Boca's reserves beat an Independiente's first team that obviously wasn't much interested, 2-0.
Tonight River will make their debut playing vs Racing, and saving most regulars for next Saturday's first "Superclasico" vs Boca of 2011.
