Apertura 2010 4th Round : The Sleeping Giant woke up ?

Things got tighter at the top of the standings as neither of the leaders, River and Velez, won and that allowed other teams to get closer.

Boca wasn't convincing, but they showed a big change of attitude, fighting for every ball like if it was a World Cup final, and got their first win of the season, 2-1 vs the until then undefeated Velez, who now lost the lead of the tournament.
Boca has only 4 points, but maybe a better future ahead now that they have less pressure. Next week's derby vs San Lorenzo will be another big test for them.

Poor game by River who almost lost their first game of the season, but still managed to get a 0-0 draw playing away vs Argentinos Jrs, who had some important missings in midfield (Ortigoza, Oberman). Argentinos lacks of good strikers to finish the goal positions they create, and this is one of the reasons why they sit very close to the bottom with only 2 points in 4 rounds.
Once again River still has a lot to improve, but they are now the only leader with 10 points.

Some teams that took advantage of the leaders losing points were San Lorenzo, Godoy Cruz and Arsenal.
San Lorenzo got a good and expected win at home 3-1 vs recently promoted All Boys, who was still in paradise after 2-0 win vs Boca, but came down to reality.

Godoy Cruz showed again that they are one of the best teams of the league in 2010 and they are every week closer from playing the next edition of Copa Libertadores for the first time in club history.
They beat Colon 3-1 playing away, in a game they started losing 1-0 but their rival got 2 silly red cards and the team from Mendoza took advantage of this and scored 3 goals in five minutes to get the second win in a row. Things are getting ugly for Colon who has only 2 points in Apertura and just 1 win in the last 18 games !

Arsenal also had a great win, 3rd in a row for them, 2-1 @ Independiente and left the Avellaneda team in the last place with only 1 point and a club in flames, with fans insulting the club president and the manager because they let go last season's coach, Americo Gallego, who is a club idol after he won the last Independiente championship in 2002.

Poor draw between Huracan and Newell's, 1-1, to open the round. Both navigate on the middle of the standings but while Newell's can focus on Copa Sudamericana (they debut in 2 weeks vs Estudiantes), Huracan's future doesn't look bright as they are sinking on the Averages table.

More was expected from the South of Gran Buenos Aires derby, Lanus -Banfield that ended in a scoreless draw. Lanus left a better impression and had the best chances to score but couldn't break a great performance by Banfield's goalkeeper, Enrique Bologna.

Tigre finally got points after losing the first 3 rounds, in a solid 3-0 win at home vs Quilmes. They had an irregular performance, but they were really needed of a win and getting it against a direct rival in the Averages table was really important for them.

Another team that needs as many points as they can get to stay in 1st division is Olimpo, who beat Racing 1-0. As in previous seasons when they were in 1st division, Olimpo shows they can be a strong home team and won so far 2 of 2 playing at Bahia Blanca.
Racing will need to do something to stop this bad streak before they are too far from the top places.

The round will be completed on September 29, when Estudiantes - Gimnasia, a big derby that was postponed, will be played.

  1. River played ok , they created many scoring opportunities, should have probably won, really pushed hard in the 2nd half, just lacked the decisive edge, Pavone, got some action time, subbed for Bunanotte but he was a non factor. Navarro made some good saves once again to save his team. Velez next week will be MASSIVE! i like our chances at home, with Velez playing midweek.

Colon, Racing were the most horrible teams, pure utter stupidity from their players to get sent off, Racing were just terrible simply, Olimpo were nothing special, quality wise, but they play with alot of fighting spirit and hungar, yes looks like going to be tough to get points in Bahia.

San Lorenzo impressive display, romagnoli great performance by him.

  2. Not a bad game for River, but after 4 rounds they did very little to deserve the 1st place.
They were playing against Argentinos who had 3 very important regulars out and had played last Thursday on Copa Sudamericana.
Look for example what Arsenal did with Independiente, who were tired and with some missings too.

    Velez-River will be fun, agree.
As a San Lorenzo fan, i hope Romagnoli can give us more of this but i know it's impossible because he has a chronic injury and will never be 100%.
