Jonas, Veron out ?

Like is usual since Maradona is the coach of the NT, he did a football practice using what would be the starting lineup for the next game.
The 11 that he set for this training game had two changes from the lineup that started vs Nigeria in the 1st game of the groups stage : Nicolas Otamendi playing on the right side of the defensive line replacing Jonas Gutierrez and Maxi Rodriguez for Juan Sebastian Veron.
The change in defense is not a big surprise because Maradona said on the press conference after the game vs Greece that in his opinion Nicolas Otamendi had been one of the best players on the field, but it is unexpected that he would leave Juan S. Veron on the bench because he was considered as a coach on the field for the team.

In my opinion, both changes are OK.
Maradona is trying to have a more solid defense with Otamendi, who has less offensive skills than Jonas but the team doesn't need those having Maxi Rodriguez, Di Maria, Tevez, Messi and Higuain to attack.

Probably tomorrow the lineup could be confirmed, but it looks like the 4-3-3 will start with :

Sergio Romero – Nicolas Otamendi, Martin Demichelis, Walter Samuel, Gabriel Heinze – Maximiliano Rodriguez, Javier Mascherano, Angel Di Maria – Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi

  1. Yes good job Diego for Otamendi selection if it is true.
He did mention after the Greece game that they can't afford to make defensive mistakes, and also he mentioned Otamendi to be the player of the game in his eyes, maybe its a hint he will start against Mexico.

Still I think Jonas and Veron could still have some part to play in this game, maybe not both, maybe one of them coming on as a sub, depending on the game situation.

Only worry I have is considering Mascherano's yellow card. If he was to pick one up, he would be suspended for the quater finals, which could be against England or Germany.

I am not sure what the Mexican coach will do, if he again leaves Hernandez on the bench, than i won't be too worried about their offence. Hernandez seems to have good chemistry with Vela and Dos Santos, and Vela not sure what shape he is in, he is slightly injured.

We are in very good shape overall, and should win this comfortably, i dont want to sound overconfident, but , Messi should have much more space to operate than he had against the Greeks. And sooner or later he will score, and his confidence will even be higher. Its always a good feeling to score.

2-0 prediction. As I believe Maradona will drill his team not to concede.
I have a feeling we will score again on a set piece goal , with the erratic Oscar Perez in net, its a good probability.

  2. i'am still looking for Di Maria to produce a magical moment, maybe he like to play on the right flank, easier for him to cut across and shoot with his left. He did score a few times from the right flank for Benfica this past season. Regardless, I hope he have a good productive game.

    vamos vamos argentina!

  3. Lineup is not 100% confirmed so there could be changes about Jonas and Veron.
Samuel still injured, will be replaced by Burdisso.
